چکیده
Abstract I identify two reasons for believing in the objectivity of mathematical knowledge: apparent and applications science. Focusing on arithmetic, analyze platonism cognitive nativism terms explaining these reasons. After establishing that both theories run into difficulties, present an alternative epistemological account combines theoretical frameworks enculturation cumulative cultural evolution. show this can explain why arithmetical knowledge appears to be objective has scientific applications. Finally, will argue that, while is compatible with platonist metaphysics, it does not require postulating mind-independent objects.

Objects and Objectivity
IT IS WDDELY HELD that the capacity for spatial thought depends upon the ability to refer to physical things. The argument is that the identification of places depends upon the identification of things; places in themselves are all very much alike and can be distinguished only by their spatial relations to things So one could not so much as think about places unless one could think about things...

Due to the variety of contexts studied, the focus on where claims of objectivity can be found varies in each case: canon, ...
متن کاملBeyond the axioms: The question of objectivity in mathematics
I will be discussing the axiomatic conception of mathematics, the modern version of which is clearly due to Hilbert; but one aspect of it goes back to Cantor. I refer here to Hilbert’s view that the demands of mathematical existence and truth are entirely met by a suitable axiomatization. By whatever dialectical process we come to adopt the axioms, whatever ‘intuitions’ lead us to them, the que...
متن کاملThe Constructed Objectivity of Mathematics and the Cognitive
Introduction This essay concerns the nature and the foundation of mathematical knowledge, broadly construed. The main idea is that mathematics is a human construction, but a very peculiar one, as it is grounded on forms of "invariance" and "conceptual stability" that single out the mathematical conceptualization from any other form of knowledge, and give unity to it. Yet, this very conceptualiz...

My research is focused on mathematical modeling in the interdisciplinary areas of materials science and crystal growth and on development of advanced computational methods for tracking material/fluid surfaces and interfaces. Primarily, I am interested in modeling formation of a micro(nano)structure arrays as a result of the morphological (shape) instabilities of a solid film surfaces, material ...
